Spike in house fires strains American Red Cross resources

FULTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Volunteers for the American Red Cross said they are running short on resources after an unusual spike in home fires in the Atlanta area.

Dennis Scudder with the American Red Cross said fires are up by 10 percent.

"That ends up being 205 responses already for this year, 431 families and about 1,300 individuals," said Scudder.

Scudder said the agency is in need of donations and volunteers.

The American Red Cross usually appears on the scene right after firefighters.

"… we are there to give them some emotional support, as well as lodging food and clothing as needed," said Scudder.

Scudder said 70 percent of their fire victims do not have renters insurance.

He said renters can obtain a policy for $5 to $20 a month.
