Group calls for new probe of 1946 Ga. lynching

Posted: Updated:

A group of civil rights leaders is calling for a joint congressional investigation and hearings into an unsolved 1946 lynching in Georgia.

The request was made in a letter dated last week to the chairmen of the House and Senate judiciary committees by representatives of the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and other groups.

Two black couples were shot and killed by an angry mob at Moore's Ford Bridge in Walton County in July 1946. Various federal, state and local investigations over the years have not resulted in any arrests, and the case remains unsolved.

The letter calls for the committees to conduct a "full-scale investigation" and asks that a special prosecutor be appointed who would report back to Congress.
