Dozens of people who live in a neighborhood tucked between two neighboring cities are pushing for an address change.
Their legal address lists them as living in Roswell but they pay taxes to -- and consider themselves -- residents of Alpharetta.
They went straight to Alpharetta's City leaders to make their plea Monday night. They want the mayor to get them an official ZIP code change.
The gated community is Bellsmith Regency just off of Upper Hembree Road near Main Street in Alpharetta. Officially, the 84 homes are officially part of the City of Alpharetta, with homeowners paying property taxes to the City.
Still, their 30076 ZIP code is from neighborhing Roswell.
"I purchased real estate in the city of Alpharetta. I shop Alpharetta, I support city functions," homeowner Judy Burkett told CBS46 reporter Donna Rapado. "I pay the property tax of Alpharetta. I want the benefits of Alpharetta. If I wanted to live in Roswell I would've purchased a piece of property in Roswell."
Burkett explained property values are higher in Alpharetta. As property owners who pay those taxes they should be able to benefit from them. And the Roswell ZIP code in Alpharetta city limits is confusing when it comes to utility and emergency service calls, as well as package deliveries.
The City Council voted unanimously Monday night to let Alpharetta's mayor write a letter to the U.S. Post Master requesting the ZIP code change. Ultimately, it is the Post Master's decision.
