ATLANTA (CBS46) -

On Tuesday, Clayton County police arrested a local teacher, Roderick Winslow Arrington, of Covington.

Arrington allegedly had a consensual relationship with a 17-year-old student.

He is charged with sexual exploitation of children, having a weapon at school functions or on school property and sexual assault with a person in custody.

According to police, Arrington was a science teacher at Charles Drew High School in Riverdale at the time of his arrest.

Clayton County Public Schools issued a statement Tuesday afternoon stating that Arrington is no longer employed by the district. "We are taking all the appropriate and necessary steps to assure that the situation is handled effectively and to ensure the welfare and safety of our students," said spokesperson Vicki Gavalas.

Arrington appeared in court today and was denied bond.
