LAWRENCEVILLE, GA (CBS46) -

Five students of Gwinnett Technical College will head to Kansas City this summer to show off their talents as they compete in the SkillsUSA competition.

The students each won gold medals in their individual categories recently at the state competition, giving Gwinnett Tech one of the strongest showings among Georgia colleges.

"We're always excited and proud when we have the opportunity to showcase the talents of our students, and the SkillsUSA competition really allows us the chance to do so," said David McCullough, Gwinnett Tech's vice president of economic development.

The gold medal winners are as follows:

  • Scott Hillyer – Residential Carpentry
  • James Stephens – Computer Programming
  • Christina Bryant – Restaurant Service
  • Julian Roberts – Commercial Baking
  • Eljesa Haxhiu – Culinary Arts

The national competition takes place in June in Kansas City.

"They'll have the opportunity to compete against some of the best in the country, and we're expecting them to come back with the gold," McCullough said.
