The attorneys for Amanda Berry and Gina DeJeus are speaking out after comedienne Joan Rivers made an inappropriate joke during a visit on the Today Show Tuesday.
According to TMZ, Joan Rivers refuses to apologize to Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus about her remarks in reference to the women's living conditions as captives in kidnapper Ariel Castro's basement.
"They got to live rent free for more than a decade," said Rivers.
Amanda and Gina's attorneys responded to the public commentary saying that the women are owed a sincere apology for Rivers' "hurtful" and "shocking" comments.
On Tuesday, April 22, on the Today show, Rivers was asked about her daughter's guest room where she'd been staying. In her answer, Joan compared it to Ariel Castro's Seymour Avenue home where Berry, DeJesus and Michelle Knight were found after being held hostage for more than 10 years.
"Those women in the basement in Cleveland had more space," Rivers replied.
TMZ reports that Joan says she will not apologize and that the women should lighten up, Rivers added. "One of them has a book deal. Neither are in a psych ward. They're ok. I bet you within three years one of them will be on Dancing with the Stars."
And Joan went on to say that plenty of comedians have done skits about tragic events like Hitler's terror and the sinking of the Titanic. Joan said, "The TV the guy gave them must not have had SNL."
