ATLANTA (CBS46) -

A Fulton County assistant district attorney and a man she was in a car with were shot multiple times around 11 a.m. Friday, according to Atlanta police.

The shooting happened on Fairway Circle in southwest Atlanta.

"He's a good guy …," said Lawrence Riddle, a friend of Trenard McConnell, the man who police say shot his wife.

The Office of the Fulton County District Attorney said the woman who was shot was April McConnell.

The man in the car with McConnell was identified as 39-year-old Levon Hailey.

A source close to the investigation confirms that a body found at Forest Lawn Cemetery is Trenard McConnell, April's husband. He is believed to be the shooter.

"I think it's out of character. This is not the type of person I see on a monthly even bi-weekly basis," said Riddle.

A police spokesman said that it is believed to be a domestic issue and that it appears there was only one gunman.

April McConnell filed for a divorce on Monday, and she did not have a Temporary Protective Order.

April McConnell was shot multiple times in the incident, including in the face, and Hailey was shot at least once, according to police. Both victims were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. McConnell was in critical condition.

The police spokesman wouldn't discuss whether the address the car was found in front of was relevant to this case.

Prior to becoming a prosecutor with the Fulton County District Attorney's Office, McConnell was a legal intern with the Safe Families initiative – a collaboration between Partnership Against Domestic Violence, the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyer's Foundation, the Fulton County Superior Court and other organizations dedicated to providing legal services and support to victims of domestic violence.

"We were deeply sadden to learn earlier today that April McConnell had been shot by her husband just four days after filing for divorce indicating her desire to leave her marriage," said Daphne Walker, President & CEO of PADV. "At PADV, we are critically aware that women are at a higher risk for serious injury or death once they make the decision to leave an abusive relationship. We work hard to provide support to women like April who have established the courage to leave in the face of life-threatening consequences. Our prayers are with April and her family and we want them to know that we are here to help during this difficult time in any way that we can."
