Church holds 'Fight Club' to attract members

Posted: Updated:

It is not every day you'll find a church pastor using violence to get more parishioners.

But New Season Church in Hiram, GA, held a mixed martial arts fight Friday night to get men to come to church.

"If you reach a man then his wife and kids are coming," Pastor Steve Flockhart said. Flockhart said he wants to fight to attract men to his sanctuary.

"It's fighting for your family, fighting for your marriage, your children, you know the whole metaphor of fighting," Flockhart said. "Some are into drugs, alcohol and pornography, those are the big ones I see all the time. We teach them to be better people through God."

Flockhart said they have roughly 1,000 members we spoke to Stephen Zirpoli who has been in the church for five years.

"It helped me to realize how to be a better father and husband," Zirpoli said.

Flockhart said all of the fighters are volunteered and are not getting paid. There is a $25 cost associated with the event. Flockhart said that covers the cost of a steak dinner and the service immediately following the fight.
