A robbery suspect is accused of ripping a necklace off the neck of a 2-year-old boy in Woodburn.

Police were called to a strip mall at 1585 N. Pacific Hwy. Tuesday to investigate a reported robbery.

A woman told police her young son was standing outside a business crying and rubbing his neck. The boy had been wearing a gold necklace, but the woman said it was now gone and the child had an abrasion on his neck.

A witness saw a man running from the scene and was able to provide a description to police.

Investigators then contacted neighboring businesses and talked to other witnesses who said they saw a man running away from the scene at the same time as the robbery.

Workers said they recognized the man as a customer. Additional information led police to identify the suspect as Jose Sanchez, 26, of Woodburn.

Police went to his home on Del Sol Court and officers said Sanchez confessed to stealing the necklace. He then turned it over to the officers.

Police returned the necklace to the family.

The boy's mother told Fox 12 on Wednesday that her son was playing outside her office when the crime happened. Through a translator, she said her child, David, was not seriously hurt, but she can't believe he was targeted in the first place.

"It's not correct that somebody would attack a little boy like that," she said. "It's not right. It's just a little boy. You don't do that."

Sanchez was booked in the Marion County Jail on charges of third-degree robbery and assault.

He was released from jail and ordered to appear in court for an arraignment May 27.
