LONGMEADOW, MA (WSHM) -

Arbitrators assigned by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission have chosen the town of Longmeadow's best and final offer in the surrounding community agreement with MGM Springfield.

"We're very pleased with he arbitration panel's decision to select Longmeadow's best and final offer as the award for the surrounding community agreement," said Longmeadow Town Manager Stephen Crane.

The town will receive a payment of $850,000 followed by 13 annual payments of $275,000.

The baseline value of the agreement is roughly $4.2 million.

That's $4 million short of their previous proposal made back in December.

"In an attempt to reach a mutual agreement, we lowered our demands quite a bit because we did want to be reasonable," said Crane.

MGM had offered the town two options with the first $200,000 and $800,000 to make traffic improvements.

The second option wasn't limited to just traffic improvements and reportedly has a cumulative value, including annual payments of $1.6 million.

MGM said they will be objecting the arbitrators' decision.

In a statement issued to CBS 3, MGM officials said, "We are disappointed with the decision, and we strongly disagree that Longmeadow will be impacted any more than the other similar sized and proximate surrounding communities ... we have submitted objections for its consideration, and we look to the commission's review of the terms of the arbitrators' decision for the final say on this matter."

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will be holding a hearing on May 2 to discuss MGM Springfield's objections.
