High winds, downed trees knock out power for thousands in Clayton County

Posted: Updated:

Georgia Power crews spent much of Wednesday morning and afternoon in Clayton County and the surrounding area, where upwards of 40,000 households lost power during severe weather Wednesday morning.

"I thought a tornado was coming or something," said Neotta Smith, speaking of the loud noise she heard as winds whipped through. The weather caused a tree to fall across the street from her home, taking out a power line.

Several trees were down along roads and in yards in the cities of Riverdale, Forest Park, and Morrow. Tree removal crews were still clearing out those trees as late as 5 p.m.

Georgia Power said they went from only 10 power outages in the south metro region, to 40,000, in a 30 minute span overnight. They'd restored power to all but roughly 3,000 customers by late Wednesday afternoon.
