MARIETTA, GA (CBS46) -

The family of Christopher Sparkman has been through a lot over the last 24 hours.

"Yesterday was a very difficult day for the family, it's been overwhelmed by a lot, but this morning is a better day," said Pastor Richard Hemphill.

Hemphill has a special relationship with the 28-year-old FedEx security guard who was gunned down at work Tuesday. Hemphill said he is Sparkman's spiritual mentor.

"This is a great young man, a great American. He served his country well and he is just a great guy," said Hemphill.

Hemphill said Sparkman was three minutes away from getting off work when Geddy Kramer, Sparkman's co-worker, attacked, and he said what happened next is an example of Sparkman's strength and love.

"He did call his wife himself from the ambulance and told his wife, ‘I've been shot, I am on my way to the hospital.' She was expecting, 'Honey, I'm on my way home,' but that didn't happen," Hemphill said.

Hemphill said Sparkman is in a medically induced coma but is doing better than he was on Tuesday.

"Chris is a man of great faith and so is his wife and the family is also and his faith is going to see him through this deep dark tragedy of his life. It is faith his family is holding onto that is going to get them through and they are not wavering at all," Hemphill said.
