Lenox Square Mall holds terrorism response drill

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Several law enforcement agencies performed active shooting drills at the Lenox Square Mall in Buckhead on Sunday.

"It will start with an IED (improved explosive devise) going off. We know we've had at least one device explode," said Brett Johnson with the FBI, describing the drill.

Officers said the event was prompted by the recent shooting at a FedEx center.

"We're going to have the SWAT team to clear an area where we don't know whether there may be other active IEDs that have not been cleared," said Johnson.

Hundreds of officers participated, including the FBI, the Atlanta Police Department and the Atlanta Fire Department.

"Sometimes you have so many people responding at once that you have to kind of sort out who's going to cover what," said Johnson.

Actors posed as victims.

The FBI said once the local police department determines there is a terrorist attack, the FBI then takes over.

In the drill, officers receive information about an attack somewhere else in the country and now there will likely be an attack on the Lenox Square Mall.

"You go somewhere, you think, 'What's the best way to get there? What's the least crowded way to get there? What's the easiest way to get out of that location, just in case something does happen?'" said Baley Goforth, a shopper.
