PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

Pender County businesses that are not restaurants or hotels/motels will now be able to serve beer as long as they get an ABC Permit. Residents voted in favor of the change during the Primary Election.

The votes were 2,172 FOR and 1,654 against the referendum.

In the past, businesses were able to serve wine by the glass with a permit, but due to a law passed in 1963, they were not able to serve beer.

Quarter Moon, a bookstore/gift shop in Topsail Beach first ran into an issue with the older law.

During an interview last year, owner, Lori Fisher said at night their shop hosts book readings and music performances. She said they often sell and serve wine during these events, explaining they have an ABC permit to do so.

During the interview, she said in April 2013 they decided to also serve beer and applied for and received a permit from the state. In July 2013, she said ABC officers called her and said they would have to revoke the permit because of the county law.

At the time of the interview, Fisher explained the beer sales really helped boost her business and bring more people in. She had said she was worried without being able to sell beer by the glass she would lose many customers.

County commissioners approved allowing the decision to go to a county vote last year.

The new law goes into effect for the whole county.
