NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

Sheriff Ed McMahon staved off a challenge from his former boss, defeating ex-Sheriff Sid Causey in the Democratic primary.

McMahon received 7,592 votes and Causey only received 1,857 votes.

Causey handpicked McMahon for the job when he announced his retirement in 2009. McMahon then won reelection in 2010. But Causey said McMahon wasn't the man he thought he was, and was so disappointed in his performance that he came out of retirement to try to unseat him.

Causey took issue with everything from McMahon's fiscal management to alleged low morale in the department. But McMahon stood by his work so far as sheriff, saying the county is a better and safer place because of him.

McMahon asked voters to look at his record over the last five years, and his reputation as a bridge builder with other agencies when considering who to vote for.
