Conversations parents should have with teen drivers

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A teen driving instructor said parents should not allow their teens to obtain a driver's license simply because they turn of age.

"If your kid is misbehaving or they are just not paying attention, or they're not listening they're not ready to get behind the wheel," said Woodrow Gaines, a teen driving instructor.

A 16-year-old girl was killed coming from school. The car was driven by an 18-year-old.

"We ask our kids to check in before they leave and when they get to their destination," said Carolyn Jones, a Gwinnett County parent.

"She can take on one passenger, but we really encourage her to not have more than one passenger in her vehicle," said Jones.

"Statistics show that when you add another teen that distraction level goes up," said Gaines.

Gaines said more teens are killed in vehicle crashes than soldiers killed in active war.

"Driver's education is basically state laws," said Gaines.

He said many schools have removed the courses and some offer them online.

Gaines said parents should set rules for their teen drivers and enforce them.

"Your teenager is going to do exactly what you show them, not what you tell them," said Gaines.
