Bryan Paces Cougars After First Day at NCAA East Regional

The College of Charleston women’s golf team got off to a tough start after the opening round of tournament play at the 2014 NCAA Division I East Regional Championship hosted by Florida State on Thursday at the SouthWood Golf Club.

CofC’s top four scorers shot a combined 1-over par on the front nine, but went 10-over on its finishing holes to put the team in 21st (+11). Sophomore Mary Chandler Bryan (Chapin, S.C.) paces the Cougars with a three-birdie, even-par round of 72 which is tied for 28th.

No. 12-ranked Vanderbilt fired a 277 and leads after the first round at 11-under. No. 34 Tulane is in second (-8), No. 20 Virginia third (-5), No. 2 Duke fourth (-4) and No. 26 NC State fifth (-2). The remaining schools in the 24-team field shot over-par rounds.

Sophomore Louise Olsson (Uddeholm, Sweden) started off the tournament with a 2-under front nine, but is tied for 60th with a first-round 74 on the par-72 course. Freshman Laura Fuenfstueck (Frankfurt, Germany) shot 3-over, sophomore Morgan Webber (Moore, S.C.) +6 and sophomore Julia Neumann (Berlin, Germany) +8. All are competing in their first NCAA Regional – the program’s first postseason team appearance since 2010.

The average score on Thursday was 74.10 off the championship tees in a field with 17 schools ranked among the Top 50 in the nation in the collegiate rankings.

The Cougars will be paired once again with Troy and Texas State and tee off tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. (ET). Live tournament scoring will be available at:
