Six people escape overnight fire in Forest Park

FOREST PARK, GA (CBS46) -

Paramedics rushed two women to a local hospital after smoke and flames forced them out of their home in the middle of the night.

Forest Park firefighters responded at 12:45 a.m. Friday to the home on Brookwood Drive, according to Deputy Fire Chief Matt Jackson.

Alice McCauley rents the basement of the home. She escaped the fire with her three young children, a 2 year old and 10-month-old twins. McCauley is glad they are light sleepers.

"The kids were crying. I'm guessing because they were inhaling the smoke a little bit," she said. "Once I heard them crying, that's what woke me up."

The children's father was on his way home from work at the time, so McCauley grabbed all three children, left through a back door and came around to the front yard.

"I came out here, and the whole top part of the house was on fire," McCauley said.

McCauley said the two women who live in the main part of the house were on the ground. One woman, who is a caretaker for the other woman, was having chest pains and was screaming.

"The other lady, she didn't want to be moved," McCauley said. Paramedics transported both women to a nearby hospital.

Firefighters are working to find the cause of the fire.
