A huge traffic headache in Lawrenceville will soon come to an end.
The Georgia Department of Transportation opened the new Georgia 20 bridge Saturday at 5 a.m. The 10-lane bridge allows Highway 20 traffic to bypass 316.
"Hallelujah!" exclaimed Donna Roberton, a driver who frequently gets stuck in traffic jams in the area.
"We are opening the new bridge over the weekend, so motorists can get accustomed to the change outside of peak travel times," said Harold Mull, district construction engineer, in a written release.
The new bridge is part of a $37.4 million project which will ultimately create an interchange along Georgia 316 with both Collins Hill Road and Georgia 20. The entire project is expected to be completed in 2016.
Lane closures took place Friday night as crews began the transition from the existing Georgia 20 to the new bridge. The bridge was ready for traffic a few hours early, ahead of the planned 8 a.m. opening.
