Carroll County deputy shoots man wielding an axe

CARROLL COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A Carroll County Sheriff's deputy was forced to shoot a man Friday morning after the man swung an axe at him.

Shortly after 5 a.m., the deputy a responded to a 911 call regarding a man on Levans Road in Temple.

The man was reportedly wielding an axe, walking back and forth in front of a home. The caller said the man also busted out a window to the home.

When the deputy arrived and ordered the unidentified 41-year-old man to drop the axe, he fled.

The officer pursued the man to the back of the home. Once in the back, the man swung the axe at the deputy. The deputy pulled his weapon and shot the suspect in the chest.

The suspect was airlifted to an Atlanta hospital and at last check he was in ICU.

The deputy involved has been placed on paid administrative leave.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
