ELOY, AZ (CBS5) -

Surrounded by loved ones, Gabriella Torres prayed, trying to find comfort in the very place her fiance was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Eloy on Sunday morning.

Torres said she and Victor Arenas had just gotten back to their home from a relative's house when the couple noticed someone outside just after 4 a.m.

"We saw someone in the yard.  He was like, 'See that, baby?'  I was like, 'Yeah.'  It was a flashlight and someone dressed in black," Torres said.

Torres told CBS 5 News that's when her 25-year-old fiance went to check it out.

"He kept saying, 'Who is that? What are you doing in my yard? What are you doing in my yard?'  No one would answer," Torres said.

Police said Arenas emerged from the house armed with a gun.

Moments later there were gunshots, she said. Police said Arenas was hit at least once, but that no officers were hurt. Stickers marked at least a half-dozen bullet holes in the front of the home.

"Victor was trying to protect his house, he was trying to protect his family," Torres said.

Eloy police Sgt. Brian Jerome said there was an exchange of words followed by an exchange of gunfire.

"We don't know what led up to Mr. Arenas coming out of the home or what led up to the confrontation," Jerome said.

Jerome said that the officer was by himself investigating an alarm at a thrift shop a few blocks away. He confirmed that the officer was on foot looking for suspects and that his car was parked on another street.

"The officer was in full uniform, basically dressed like I am. Whether Mr. Arenas knew he was a police officer I don't know," Jerome said.

Eloy police handed the investigation to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.
