Athens-Clarke County police are seeking information in a shooting that killed one man and wounded another outside a bar Saturday morning.
One man was killed and another man was hospitalized when shots were fired into a group of people standing in a vacant parking in Athens. The group had congregated following the closing of a nearby nightclub on Commerce Road when someone began shooting around 2:40 a.m.
The two victims Derrick Merritt and Jamaris Walter were hit by bullets. Both are 22years old. Merritt died of his injuries according to police. Walter is hospitalized. His condition is listed as serious.
Preliminary information indicated that Merritt and Walter played no role in triggering the assault according to police.
Witnesses are encouraged to come forward with any information to help to identify those responsible for the shooting.
Police are asking for additional information concerning a light colored Ford Mustang and its occupants that was seen leaving the parking lot.
Anyone with information concerning the shooting is asked to contact the Athens-Clarke County Police Department's Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 706-613-3342. Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those individuals responsible for this crime.
