MARIETTA, GA (CBS46) -

Is your cat too fat? A local veterinarian is encouraging cat owners to take a minute to find out.

Dr. Michael Good, owner of Town & Country Veterinary Clinic in Marietta and founder of the Homeless Pets Foundation, says obesity is a major health issue for America's cats.

Good teamed up with the Purina Cat Chow "Why Weight" program to encourage cat owners to take simple steps to learn if their cat may be overweight or obese.

An extra 3 pounds on a 10-pound cat is equivalent to 45 pounds on a 150-pound adult, animal experts say.

Dr. Good gave a demonstration Monday on Better Mornings Atlanta, showing cat owners how they can tell if their cat is overweight and what steps to take if it is.
