Buford Drive in Gwinnett reopened after gas leak

Posted: Updated:

A gas leak near Coolray Field shut down traffic on a busy Gwinnett roadway.

Crews were called to 1 Braves Ave. in Lawrenceville at about 9:30 a.m. after a passer-by smelled natural gas.

Firefighters found a strong odor and an active gas leak when they arrived.

The leak was caused by a utility crew boring near Buford Drive right in front of the stadium.

Firefighters monitored gas readings in the area. An emergency crew from Lawrenceville Gas managed to stop the leak just after 11 a.m. The road was re-opened about a half hour later.

The gas company estimates a 4- to 6-inch gas line was damaged.

There were no evacuations and no injuries reported. About 15 people at Coolray Field at the time were asked to shelter-in-place until the situation was resolved.
