TAMPA, FL (WFLX) - Baby JJ Snyder is not even a day old, and yet the beginning of his life is quite a story. His 8-year-old sister, Jazmine Mcenaney, helped their mother deliver him.
Joseph James Snyder knows how to make an entrance. At just 7 a.m. Tuesday morning, the 8-year-old sister called 9-1-1 stating, "Our mommy is pregnant, and her water just broke." Her mom, Krystal Garcia, was screaming in pain and panicking in the background as she lay on the floor of her bathroom.
The baby would be arriving two weeks early. Krystal said that if her daughter wasn't there to call 911, there was no way she would have made it to the phone.
The Tampa Fire Dispatcher, Emily Hall, said when she asked if the mother was having contractions, she told her they were very bad and the daughter said she could see the baby's head. This was when Emily Hall knew she had a doozy.
Hall says, "When her mom would scream, she would scream with her." On speaker phone, Hall gave Jazmine and Krystal instructions. Hall told them, "I want you to get in a comfortable position, preferably on your back."
Jazmine unlocked the door, and the paramedics raced in, as well as JJ. The labor lasted only six minutes.
Hall began trying to give Krystal and Jazmine more instructions just as Krystal screamed, "The baby is out! The baby is out! Jazmine, is the baby out? I was freaking out the whole time. She said he was out, but I didn't hear anything, I didn't know you don't hear anything till they get the stuff out. I was just hearing silence. I thought I was giving birth to a dead baby."
Hall says, "'It was not crying yet. I just said my little prayer at that point." The paramedics arrived and quickly realized JJ was just being much quieter than his mom and sister; he was fine! Jazmine got a certificate from hospital nurses and a new admiration from her mom.
Krystal says, "She definitely stayed calm when she needed to. I was hysterical."
And one last word from Hall, "Awesome. Just awesome."
