Mom, daughter prepare to leave for CO in quest for medical marijuana help

SANDY SPRINGS, GA (CBS46) -

Corey Lowe tried to soothe her daughter, Victoria, as she tossed and turned from the pain of epileptic seizures.

Victoria was admitted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite on Wednesday after suffering life-threatening seizures at school.

"Up to 15 seizures in less than a minute or two," Lowe said.

Victoria was born with mitochondrial disease, a genetic disorder that drains energy from her body and plagues her with seizures.

"[Tuesday] night she had one that lasted four minutes where she actually stopped breathing, her lips turned blue," Lowe said.

Parents like Lowe believe medical marijuana could reduce the number of seizures their kids suffer and wean them off conventional medication with severe side effects.

"She's like a little zombie with all the meds," Lowe lamented.

Lawmakers earlier this year failed to approve a bill that would have legalized medical marijuana in oil-based form for young children who suffer with life-threatening seizures.

Gov. Nathan Deal last month approved a plan to begin clinical tests of medical marijuana here in Georgia.

Lowe believes the move is a good first step, but there is no timetable on when the studies will begin.

Lowe said her daughter needs help now.

"We don't have time for clinical trials," Lowe said.

Lowe is making a tough choice and moving with Victoria to a state where medical marijuana is legal.

"Make a move and go to Colorado and try the medicine that's available now," Lowe said.

Lowe, however, must leave behind her husband and their two young sons with a painful message.

"I love you. I'm sorry I can't be your mom for these next few months. I have to make a move to save your sister's life," Lowe said.

Lowe and her daughter will head to Colorado at the end of the month with the help of the Journey of Hope fund set up by state Rep. Allen Peake, who sponsored the medical marijuana bill.
