Atlanta to see unusually cold start to Friday

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Old man winter simply doesn't want to go away.

Despite the fact that we're well into May, you'll actually need a jacket when you leave for work or school Friday morning.

Chief meteorologist Markina Brown is forecasting a low of 47 degrees Friday morning. The normal low for Friday is 60 degrees.

I'll do the math for you...that's 13 degrees below average.  And as usual, it'll be several degrees cooler in the suburbs of Cobb, Cherokee, Forsyth, DeKalb and Clayton County.

Despite it being well below average Friday morning, the 40s are not completely uncommon this time of year.

We typically stop seeing 40-degree temperatures in Atlanta on May 10, according to Ryan Willis at the National Weather Service in Peachtree City.

Willis says the latest we ever saw 40-degree temperatures in Atlanta was way back in 1917 when it hit 47 degrees in Atlanta on June 16th!

In case you're wondering, there are no low temperature records in jeopardy Friday. The record low is 39.
