The powerhouse building at Lake Allatoona caught fire on Monday afternoon. The building houses the electrical system that controls the lake's dam.
Thick black smoke poured out of the building as firefighters from Bartow County and the City of Cartersville worked to control the fire.
Bartow County Fire Chief Craig Milsap said the fire started around 3:40 p.m. at the end of Allatoona Dam Road. The chief said the electrical system in the powerhouse was being reworked and renovated. When workers re-activated the grid it started a fire in the installation.
Chief Milsap said the good news is that because workers have a backup system the fire never jeopardized the dam's regular operations.
