Michelle Nunn takes primary victory, awaits Republican Senate challenger

Posted: Updated:

Supporters of Michelle Nunn enjoyed a celebratory gathering at the Sheraton in downtown Atlanta on Tuesday night, as the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate coasted to an easy win over three challengers in the primary election.

Nunn took the stage just after 9 p.m. to give a victory speech, taking roughly 15 minutes to thank supporters and look ahead to the general election in November.

Her Republican challenger was not decided as of late Tuesday night, but Nunn said her team is ready for whatever comes next.

"I think we have a lot of energy and idealism and passion, and we can feel it here tonight," said Nunn. "People are ready for making a change in Georgia, sending a different kind of leader to break through the dysfunction in Washington."

When asked about the possibility of becoming Georgia's first female U.S. senator, Nunn downplayed the prospect, touting instead her leadership abilities.

"I think Georgians are going to look for who the best candidates are to represent them," said Nunn. "I believe my experience as a CEO of an organization, someone who's been a public servant for 25 years, and a wife, a mother, and who understands what that means, is all a part of that package. And it certainly would be exciting to make history in Georgia."

Nunn's father and former U.S. Sen. Sam Nunn was in attendance but did not speak publicly.
