Man with a gun shot by Atlanta police as his home burns

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Firefighters battling a blaze on South Gordon Street in Atlanta, came around a corner to attack the flames from the back of the home when they came face to face with a man and his gun.

They claim he pointed the gun in their direction, so they retreated back around the side of the home and passed the information onto the police.

When police responded they surrounded the backyard the man was in. Neighbors began gathering to see what police were up to, pulling out their cell phones to record what happened next.

An officer approaches the filming crowd and asks what the man's problem is. One neighbor tries to tell the officer he has mental problems. Another tells the officer the woman doesn't know what she's talking about.

The officer walks away from the woman who steps back to the edge of the gathering group of onlookers. Moments later, what appears to be a struggle occurs between the man and another unidentified woman in the backyard.

The man and woman grapple for what is believed to be a gun, then the man breaks free from the woman and runs away from her but straight at police.

There is a hail of gunfire. The man falls.

Police are not saying who shot first; the incident is under investigation.

Neighbors describe the man as 'good' and 'quiet'. They say he kept to himself.

His neighbor across the street says the man inherited the home when his father died.

Firefighters labeled the house as a hoarder's home, with stuff filling the rooms from floor to ceiling.

While the shooting was happening next door, fire crews continued to fight the fire. They were able to limit the damage to the back half of the home.

They believe the fire started somewhere in the back, possibly the basement. They are trying to determine if the fire was intentionally set.

Next door, cell phone video recorded somewhere around two dozen rounds being fired when the shooting took place. The man was shot several times, but survived the shooting.

He was rushed to Grady Hospital, where police say he underwent surgery. His condition has not been released by police.
