FRANKLIN COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A fatal accident in Franklin County claimed the life of a deputy who was also the sheriff's son.

Franklin County Deputy Cruz Thomas, 26, lost control of his patrol vehicle when a tractor-trailer attempted to change lanes on I-85 near mile marker 163, according to Georgia State Patrol. The incident happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Thomas was traveling northbound on the left lane on the interstate. He was attempting to catch up to a traffic violator when the 18-wheeler changed lanes, forcing Thomas' car into the grass median.

Thomas lost control of the vehicle. It traveled across both northbound lanes of I-85. The car overturned before hitting several trees, killing him.

He was the son of Franklin County Sheriff Steve Thomas.
