Snellville city leaders are trying to find out who stole a box of tiles from the new veterans' memorial site, Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The tiles contain the names of veterans, and were to be placed on the memorial wall in advance of Saturday's dedication in front of City Hall.
"One of the boxes was taken, just was gone," said Mayor Pro Tem and Vietnam veteran Tom Witts. "There's going to be people who come Saturday to see a name, and eight or nine people will be disappointed that they're not going to be there."
Each tile costs roughly $100 to have labeled with a name. Witts said there's no reason for anyone to take the tiles.
"They did not know what they were taking or they wouldn't have taken it," said Witts. "I don't believe there was any malice intended, I think it was a prank that went wrong."
He said the city will be able to replace the tiles likely within a few weeks.
