Are you traveling this Memorial Day weekend? If so, you are not alone.
AAA Travel projects 36.1 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, a 1.5 percent increase from the 35.5 million people who traveled last year.
The company said a third of us here in Atlanta are traveling for the travel period between Thursday and Monday.
"A long and unusually harsh winter gave many Americans the travel bug," said Mark Jenkins, a AAA spokesman said. "Combine rising temperatures with signs of an improving economy, and travel for the holiday should hit a new post-recession high."
Hilton Head, SC, is the top weekend destination. It's followed by Savannah, then the Tennessee cities of Gatlinburg, Chattanooga and Nashville.
By noon Friday, the Georgia Department of Transportation is suspending construction until Tuesday of next week.

AAA and Bud Light will offer the Tow to Go program from May 23-26.
The program is designed to help discourage an intoxicated driver from getting behind the wheel. Anyone, AAA member or not, can call (855) 2-TOW-2-GO for a free ride and tow home.
