Boating safety stressed this weekend

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS46) -

State rangers and Department of Natural Resources officials will be out on local waterways enforcing all kinds of regulations as part of their "Choose Your Ride" program this Memorial Day holiday.

With the holiday now upon us, law enforcement is once again increasing their presence by land and by water and it seems as if the campaign is having a dramatic and noticeable change on the negative boating statistics.

Nationwide, over the last 20 years, boating-related fatalities have dropped by 273 deaths. Twenty years ago, it was in the 970 range. Today, we are down to the 650 range.

The Department of Natural Resources in Georgia says lower fatalities are a combination of education and aggressive enforcement.

Last year, Governor Nathan Deal made it a point to enact mandatory boater education for the state. And, this July 1, we will have our first mandatory boater education law go into effect.
