Crews extinguish massive fire in Marietta that forced evacuations

MARIETTA, GA (CBS46) -

Fire crews battled a massive fire in Marietta Friday night that forced evacuations.

The fire broke at Amrep Inc., at about 8 p.m. The business is located on Industrial Park Drive near Cobb Parkway and Allgood Road. Police officers noticed the blaze while patrolling in the area.

Cobb and Marietta fire say the flames were finally extinguished after 4 a.m. Saturday.

Evacuations were ordered near the site of the fire, according to an alert sent from Marietta police.

CBS46 photographer Chris Peters also reported hearing an explosion while filming video of the blaze. Several more witnesses reported hearing explosions as well.

Amrep Inc. makes cleaning chemicals in Marietta. The smoke is not toxic, according to a spokesperson with Marietta police.

The investigation into the cause is still going on and firefighters will stay on the scene Saturday to lookout for hot spots.

All of the major roadways near the scene have been re-opened.

No one was injured.
