SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A 9-month-old girl has been hospitalized after falling from a balcony at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Savannah on Friday night.

The baby girl was being held by her mother on the 5th floor, around 8 p.m., when the baby slipped from her grip and fell, according to Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan spokesperson, Julian Miller.

The baby was transported to Memorial University Medical Center in critical condition, according to police.

WTOC spoke to a woman who was walking out of the Hyatt's gift shop when it all happened. She heard something fall behind her, turned around, and realized it was a baby. The woman said the baby girl was not breathing at first, and two other hotel guests helped perform CPR. She says the child finally started breathing again, even wiggling her legs, but she never cried. The woman says the baby's parents were very shaken up. We do not yet know what caused the mother to lose her grip on the baby.

WTOC also spoke to some Hyatt Regency hotel guests who said they were shocked when they heard the news.

"From the fifth floor landing on that lobby, that's hard to believe," said Hyatt guest, Gary Dodson.

"My heart just breaks," said Hyatt guest, Sharon Dodson. "I have five grandchildren and I just can't even imagine, those parents must be devastated."

Hyatt Regency General Manager, Scott Snipes, told WTOC they are offering support along with their thoughts and prayers to the family. They are also working with the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department as they continue to investigate.

The baby remains in critical condition- of course we will keep you updated.
