Church burglars elude authorities in Lumpkin County

LUMPKIN COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Sheriff's investigators in Lumpkin County are seeking help from the public in trying to track down the people responsible for three church break-ins. A sheriff's spokesman said all three crimes happened within a few hours of one another, the morning of May 13.

St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church, Concord Baptist Church, and Mt. Sinai Baptist Church were burglarized, suffering property and money losses. Investigators believe the same people were behind the three incidents.

"I don't know, maybe they have no moral conscience or something," said Robert Wright, a member of St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church. Members there arrived in the office the morning of May 13 to find money missing from deposit envelopes. The money had been collected during offering in the preceding Sunday service.

"To me it appears to be organized, that this wasn't the first time this happened," said Wright. "We were just, you might say, next on the list."

Anyone with information on the burglaries is asked to call the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Department.
