Soldiers of Georgia's National Guard were celebrated in a send-off ceremony Thursday morning in Toccoa, prior to their nine month deployment to Afghanistan. The men and women of the 867th Vertical Engineering Company represent the last scheduled deployment by Georgia National Guard forces to serve in the war in Afghanistan.
"It means a lot to us, to be the last ones from Georgia to step up the bar, and take this role on," said Specialist Shawl Israel.
"It feels like my whole life has been building up to this moment," said Specialist Sterling Tolman. He was just 8 years old when America was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001. Now, at 21 years of age, he is ready to serve in the war on terror.
"I'm kind of amazed that I find myself here," he said.
His company will work with U.S. forces in combat and operational support roles. The 867th is expected to be home in April of 2015.
