1 child killed in Fayetteville crash

Posted: Updated:

Fayetteville police are investigating a fatal crash involving children on Highway 314 near Pavilion Parkway.

The crash happened just before 10 a.m. Friday, when a vehicle traveling northbound on Highway 314 attempted a left turn onto Pavilion Parkway. The driver turned into the path of a pickup truck traveling in the southbound lanes. The truck was unable to stop before crashing into the vehicle

Four children and one adult in passenger vehicle were taken to various hospitals. One child was pronounced dead at the hospital. The driver of the pickup was not injured.

Fayetteville police spokesman Sgt. Mike Whitlow said it's too soon to tell which driver was at fault, but said the driver carrying the four children was "irresponsible" for allowing the kids to all sit in the back seat.

"There's only three seatbelts in the back of that car, so that tells you there never was an opportunity for that (fourth) child to have a seat belt on," said Whitlow.

He said the child who was not wearing a seatbelt was killed.

The intersection has a left turn signal traffic light. A Georgia State Patrol accident reconstruction team was called to the scene to aid in the department's investigation.
