GRIFFIN, GA (CBS46) -

A military veteran shot and killed a Griffin police officer early Saturday morning, police said, as the officer was trying to arrest the man's friend.

It happened at about 2:30 a.m. at a Waffle House on North Expressway in Griffin.

The officer is identified as Kevin Jordan, 43. He had been with Griffin Police Department for four years, police said.

Griffin police said Jordan was working overnight off-duty as a security guard at the Waffle House when three people walked into the restaurant causing a scene. The employees asked Jordan to remove them, so he escorted them out to the parking lot.

A woman, identified as Chantell Mixon, 28, started fighting the officer. Jordan tried to arrest her, police said.

That's when Michael Dewayne Bowman, 30, of Griffin shot Jordan several times in the back at close range as the officer handcuffed Mixon on the ground, police said. One of the bullets somehow got past Jordan's bullet-proof vest.

Jordan's brother Raymond Jordan happened to be visiting the officer at the restaurant. He had a permit to carry a gun, police said. He pulled out his weapon and returned fire at Bowman, striking him.

Paramedics rushed the officer and Bowman to Spalding Regional Medical Center. The officer was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, police said. Bowman was transferred to Atlanta Medical Center where he is listed in critical but stable condition. Bowman is "former military," according to police. According to his Facebook page, he served in the U.S. Army and the Georgia National Guard.

Mixon and Tyler Taylor, 23, were taken into police custody. Bowman and Mixon are charged with murder. Bowman for reportedly pulling the trigger and Mixon since police say her obstruction lead to Jordan's death. Taylor is charged with disorderly conduct.

Officer Jordan, a marine, leaves behind seven children, one of whom is graduating in the next week, friends said.

"Officer Jordan had been with the Griffin Police Department for four years and was much respected amongst his peers and within the community," said Lt. Mike Richardson. "This is a tragic loss for the Jordan family, our police department family and the City of Griffin. We are deeply saddened by these events and send our condolences to the family of Officer Jordan. We request that you keep the Jordan family in your prayers and thoughts as well as our local law enforcement community. Officer Jordan will be greatly missed."

A prayer vigil will be held for Jordan at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Aaron's Furniture store located right next to the scene of the crime.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation.
