An 18-month-old baby boy is in stable but non-responsive condition after being hit by a car.

Ellijay police got a call Friday at about 9 p.m. after a father ran his toddler son over to the North Georgia Medical Center.

The father told police he had been playing with his young children at the Gilmer County River Park just across the street from the hospital. He had been pushing the little boy in a stroller as they walked back to the family van.

He took his son out of the stroller and was putting in the van when a silver Ford Fusion drove by and hit the 18-month-old. The father said the car had a "drive out tag" and could not identify the driver.

With the help of the Georgia State Patrol, Ellijay police were able to track down the driver in Waleska.

The Cherokee County Sheriff's office arrested Jordan Allen Hyde, 26 of Talking Rock. He is charged with leaving the scene of a hit and run and serious injury by vehicle.
