Firefighters responding to a house fire in Gwinnett County found more than just smoking flames.
They found a woman in her 50s dead inside the home on the 800 block of Heritage Valley Road in Norcross. Now investigators are trying to figure out how she died.
The victim's son was in college in New York, and when he could not reach his mother on the phone after several attempts, he made the trip down here and discovered her dead.
"What we found was no active fire at this location," said Gwinnett County fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge. "Apparently this fire occurred some time ago."
Rutledge said the fire was contained only to a bedroom.
One neighbor next door said she saw the woman just Friday coming from the grocery store, but she didn't speak, which the neighbor said is out of character because they always carried on a conversation.
Police say for now they will process the scene as if it was a homicide. Only because they simply don't know what happened.
