World's elite runners not invited to Peachtree Road Race

ATLANTA (AP) -

This year's Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race will be hosting the U.S. men's and women's 10K national championships, and that means some of the world's elite runners are not being invited.

An American hasn't won the male or female divisions in the annual Fourth of July race since 1995.

Rich Kenah, the executive director of the Atlanta Track Club, says it's a one-time change not to invite elite runners from other countries and the policy is typical of other races hosting national titles. Elite international runners can still enter through the lottery system, but are unlikely to do so since they won't be eligible for prize money.

Some 60,000 runners participated in last year's race, billed as the largest road race in the U.S.
