Georgia senator calls for investigation into raid that injured child

Posted: Updated:

Sen. Vincent Fort joined Mawuli Davis, the family attorney of the injured infant, Tuesday to deliver a letter to the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia Sally Yates.

He is calling for an investigation into the no-knock warrant raid that left 19-month old Bounkham Phonesavanh severely injured by a flash grenade on May 28.

The Phonesavanh family was staying at a relative's home when the raid took place. The flash grenade was thrown into the child's crib and he is now in a medically induced coma in the Grady Memorial Hospital Burn Unit.

Gov. Nathan Deal said he's awaiting results of the investigation before deciding whether any executive action or state legislation is needed.

Police have said officers were searching for a potentially armed drug suspect and didn't know children were inside.

On June 7, there will be a mass petition for redress of grievances held at the courthouse in Habersham County.

At 11 a.m. and at 1 p.m. sharp, a group will march from the courthouse to the Habersham Sheriff's office to turn in their demands.

The event is hosted by Georgia Taxpayers Alliance.
