Gwinnett County investigators look for arsonists

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA (CBS46) -

Gwinnett County fire investigators are looking for the people responsible for a string of arsons around Sweetwater Road in Lawrenceville.

Four small grass fires were set between 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The fires were primarily in the wood line between the Prescott and Cascade apartments. Ferguson Elementary School is also nearby.

"We saw smoke from our apartment; it was very dark, and I told my husband something was wrong," said Tikia Waldon.

Firefighters extinguished the flames before property was damaged or anyone was hurt.

Investigators are looking for three to four teens, described as older, seen in the area at the time of the fires.

"We believe these teens know something about that fire or may be responsible for those fires," said Captain Tommy Rutledge, public information officer for the Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

Residents said they hope the arsonists are caught quickly.

"It's no joke; it's not funny. Lives are at-stake," said Terry Patterson.

Anyone with information should contact the Gwinnett Fire Investigations Section at (678) 518-4890.
