Restaurant Report Card: Hong Kong King Buffet fails 12 times in 8 years

Posted: Updated:
GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A metro Atlanta restaurant is in hot water after failing a health inspection for the second time this year.

Hong Kong King Buffet at 5905 Jimmy Carter Blvd. in Norcross scored only 48 points and a "U" for unsatisfactory.

The report says raw chicken, pork and rice noodles were stored at room temperature. Plus, raw chicken was stored on the same table as washed vegetables, and an employee handled raw chicken and pork chops without changing gloves.

"These are critical violations, have you corrected these?" CBS46's Adam Murphy asked management.

"We did correct it by the way. Yes, everything has been corrected," Hong Kong King Buffet manager Jimmy Arianto said.

But will it last? Management failed to make permanent corrections after receiving a score in the 50s in January.

Their recent troubles prompted us to take a closer look at their history. It turns out they've failed 12 inspections during the past eight years with scores as low as 28, 44 and 47. It's a troubling trend that has caught the attention of the health department.

"They are on the cusp of being closed permanently, it sounds like?" Murphy asked.

"Yes, they are," Joseph Sternberg with the Gwinnett County Environmental Health Department said.

That means if the Hong Kong King Buffet fails their follow-up inspection or doesn't eliminate some of their repeat violations, they will be shut down.

"I will do my best to make sure this thing will not happen again," Arianto said.

Now to some good scores:

  • Summit Deli at 7245 Rockbridge Rd. in DeKalb County scored 92 points.
  • In Fulton County, Local Three Kitchen and Bar at 3290 Northside Parkway in Atlanta picked up 95 points and an "A."
  • In Cobb County, Los Bravos at 1360 Powers Ferry Rd. in Marietta received a 96.

Our featured restaurant of the week is Marietta Fish Market at 3185 Canton Rd. They've received three perfect health scores in a row and are known for their big seafood platters.
