Massive youth sports park opens

Posted: Updated:

The first section of a billion-dollar development opened in Bartow County on Thursday. Once completed, Lakepoint Sports is expected to become the world's largest youth sports park.

The 1400-acre development, located in Emerson near Lake Allatoona, will eventually include 44 sports, 100 restaurants, and 25 to 30 hotels. A movie theater and bowling alley will also be added.

The development is geared toward the increasingly popular youth travel sports leagues and their tournaments that often send young players out of state for weekend games.

Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez is also one of the project developers.

"I don't think there's any other place like this in the country, and it's just going to get bigger and better," Gonzalez said.

Once completed in two to three years, it's expected to attract 6 million visitors annually. Gonzalez said visitors will include many scouts.

Thursday the first section opened, which boasts baseball, sand volleyball, and the state's first, full-sized cable wakeboard park.

Ryan Brewer, 14, traveled from Florida to play in a baseball game.

"It's like a major league kind of feel," he said while admiring the turf fields and the LED lights.

Ground on the facility was broken in 2012.
