Elementary school information found dumped on local road

NEWNAN, GA (CBS46) -

A Coweta County woman said she was alerted to trash on her property from a garbage truck that lost a bag of trash, when she went to investigate she found information on students from Western Elementary School in Newnan.

"I consider anything with a child's picture, a name, and phone number important," Laurita Olmstead said. "In this day and age we have to protect our students."

Olmstead said she made the discovery on Tuesday afternoon. After multiple attempts to call the district she said no one really cared or paid much attention to what she was trying to tell them.  That is when she called a local newspaper and told them what she had found.

"After that, the following morning, members of the school and a member of the board of education came out and picked up all the trash,"Olmstead said.

Olmstead said there were roughly seven to 10 laminated cards in her yard that had a Pre-K student's picture, home phone number and name.

"I called a mom whose son was on the card, she was extremely concerned," Olmstead said.  "They could take that phone number and find her address and where her kids live. The two things that ran through my mind is pedophiles, and stolen identities. Pedophiles are worse than they have ever been."

A district spokesperson told CBS46's Mike Paluska that a majority of the items did not need to be shredded. But, the sensitive information should have been shredded before it was thrown in the dumpster.

Olmstead said she is happy that she is the one who found the garbage and not a criminal.

"I am glad it was me, I am glad it didn't go somewhere else, because if it could have gone anywhere else. There is no telling what would have happened," Olmstead said.
