Local agencies provide support while fire rages in Hazlehurst

HAZLEHURST, GA (WTOC) -

Agencies across the region continue to battle a massive fire that erupted at a Hazlehurst lumberyard early Monday morning.

The fire has raged for over eight hours at Thompson Hardwood Mill off of Baxley Highway. Authorities have begun opening portions of the road, but a majority of the road around the mill remains closed as more and more agencies show up to help fight the fire that is still not 100 percent contained.

More than five counties have a fire department present, from Jeff Davis, Coffee, Ware, Toombs and Montgomery counties.

Many more have also showed up to help fight, including the Dept. of Corrections. The Georgia Forestry Commission is assisting from overheard, using helicopters to dump water on the fire from above.

And it's not just fire crews that are providing assistance. Other local agencies, like the Red Cross, are out providing food and drinks to everyone.

"When it's such a hot day, as it is today, the firemen with all the fire gear they have on, they need to be replenished and have a lot of calories and electrolytes put back in their bodies so that they can continue fighting the fire," said Red Cross Disaster Services Specialist Mary Roche.

The Red Cross said it plans on providing dinner as well, and that will be necessary because the crews are expected to remain on scene until Tuesday morning.
