County employees may not be able to carry handguns or other
weapons in any government buildings. County officials say they are in favor of
the proposed resolution.
Dougherty County leaders are trying to figure out how to
handle the state's new gun law that goes into effect next month.
"This is basically forcing all local governments in
Georgia by House Bill 60 to make a declaration," said Richard Crowdis,
Today, Dougherty County Commissioners discussed a proposed
resolution in response to the bill.
"Make resolutions to prohibit their employees from
bringing weapons to the job," said Crowdis,
If the resolution is passed by commissioners, all Dougherty
County employees working in a government building, can't bring their handgun or
other weapons inside. The only exception is law enforcement officials.
Commissioners and the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office are
working on providing extra security measures for the government center and Central
Square to comply with the new state law.
"The access to the building has to be limited and
security measure has to be in place," said Col. Mark Shirley, Dougherty.
The proposed resolution doesn't only include bringing guns
in the workplace.
"Also in county vehicles. If they are working in county
vehicles they can't have a weapon in a county vehicle," said Crowdis.
Commissioners will take a final vote on the
resolution at their meeting Monday, June 9
